There’s a common misconception that osteoporosis can’t really be helped. That’s why we talked to Dr. Vafa Tabatabaie, an expert in metabolic bone disease and osteoporosis, about it. Here’s her advice for anyone who has been diagnosed with osteoporosis.
1. Consult an expert about your treatment options, including supplements and medication. There are many medications available that are highly effective with very low risk of negative side effects. An expert can help identify the best option for you.
2. Implement fall prevention measures. For example, turn on the light if you get up to use the restroom during the night. Use tape to secure loose rugs. Hold the rail while climbing stairs. Preventing falls now helps reduce your risk of fracture.
3. Each patient is different, and some may need to start getting bone density tests earlier or more frequently than others. Just be sure you stay on top of yours. It helps your doctor monitor your bone health and ensure you’re on the right treatment regimen.
If you have osteoporosis and would like to speak to an expert about your treatment options, we’re happy to help.
