In Nov. 1980, Seattle voters rejected an initiative that would have brought rent control. That wasn't the only time some Seattle residents wanted rent control. It was discussed in the late 1960s and again in Jan. 1977. Residents made another effort in Oct. 1978.
On April 23, 2015, Seattle City Councilman Nick Licata told KIRO 7 he is leading an effort -- along with fellow councilmember Kshama Sawant -- to demand a total repeal of the state law banning rent control, in hopes that Seattle can take government control of spiking rents.
