How Do I Know What Size iPad Cover To Buy?
--------------------------------------------------------------------------
There was only one size of iPad until Apple produced several sizes. You either had or didn't have an iPad. It was simple to find the correct iPad case size. Either it was for the iPad or it wasn't. Oh, those were the days of 2010!
When it came time to renew the iPad, Apple produced the iPad 2 and a smaller-sized Mini variant, following the product strategy of the iPods. So now we have the original iPad in one size, the new iPad 2 in a somewhat different size, and a new smaller Mini. In one step, we went from a single iPad size to three. Yikes! This was still the good old days, compared to how things are now!
Apple sensibly modified its naming scheme as the iPad range grew. They altered it up and went with the same method as their MacBooks, designating the newer models after the screen size (10.2, 11, 12.9) rather than the generation (iPad 1, iPad 2, iPad 3). Of course, Apple did this after releasing three or four different versions of the original iPad, further complicating things for anyone looking for a case for an older model.
When looking for the proper size case, the inevitable switch to and present use of naming by size helps. When someone from MacCase is on the phone with a customer, they frequently ask, "Which iPad do you have?" or "What size is it?" The majority of the time, the customer knows what size they have and we can match them with the appropriate case.
When you get your iPad or iPad Pro home and start using it for a while and realize you need a case, the size of the iPad you're using might easily be forgotten. It's not as if the size is displayed on the login screen every time you check-in. It would not be difficult for Apple to provide a setting that tells you what iPad size and generation you have.
The size isn't even inscribed into the rear of the aluminum case. (If you're listening, Apple, that would help.) So you either know or don't know if you have a 10.9, 11, or 12.9 on your scale. You might order something different than an iPad Pro 11 case if you don't have an 11-inch Apple tablet.
