Tough COVID-19 measures in place across all of Taiwan as the island tries to contain a growing outbreak. The alert level has been raised to the second-highest tier, just below lockdown. Despite its earlier success in containing the pandemic for more than a year, the number of domestic cases in Taiwan has exceeded 1,200. Around 400,000 AstraZeneca vaccine doses arrived in Taiwan on May 19 under the COVAX programme, but that is still not enough for the island with a population of 23 million. So far, less than 1% of Taiwanese have been vaccinated.
