Despite a limited release in March 1983 and minimal promotion from Universal Pictures, 'Tender Mercies' defied expectations and emerged as a critical triumph. Directed by Australian filmmaker Bruce Beresford, this poignant music drama grossed $8.44 million at the box office, garnered recognition at the 1983 Cannes Film Festival, and secured five nominations at the 1984 Academy Awards, ultimately winning Best Actor in a Leading Role for Robert Duvall and Best Writer.
