A quilt is like a hug, says one of the women in a Louisiana quilting group with a special purpose. And on Veterans' Day the quilting group gives away such hand-stitched fabric "hugs" to veterans in their area.
The Gilded Ladies in Sulphur started three years ago, founded by Alice Perry, said one member C.J. Long.
"We started making quilts for veterans, and we'd give them to them every year on Veteran's Day. And she has since passed away. We decided to continue on in her honor," Long said.
The group of about six to seven ladies gets together once a week to sew the quilts they will eventually give away. The first year it was five. That number grew to six last year and this year the group will give away another six during a ceremony planned at the Henning Cultural Center in Sulphur.
Long said the majority of the quilts they have given away so far have been to World War II or Vietnam veterans although a few Friday will be given to veterans from Afghanistan and Iraq.
