Exploring the origins and work of the RNLI from its humble beginnings to the modern day organisation it has become. The largest charity dedicated to saving lives at sea with over 8000 people rescued by RNLI lifeboats each year.
From the first organised attempt to save lives in 1771, to the present day, the original aim of "preservation of life from shipwreck" has never changed. If the call comes, the lifeboats are put to sea, in even the foulest weather.
Using archive footage and stills to show the development of the institution itself, and the improvements in the boats they use- the 'History of the RNLI' tells the definitive story of these "Heroes of the Sea".
A Channel Television production for Castle Communications PLC. 1994.
Released as a WHSmith Exclusive VHS in 1994.
