Seemingly easy at first glance, localizer (LOC) approaches are arguably some of the trickiest approaches out there, which take time and practice to execute correctly. Imagine getting close to the arrival in instrument conditions only to find out that the glide slope is out of service. There may be a variety of reasons why a glide slope is not operational. LOC approaches are time-tested fallback arrival procedures that do work, and undoubtedly have gotten many pilots out of a difficult situation.
