One garment worker was killed and several others were reportedly injured in Bangladesh on Wednesday after garment workers clashed with police during their protest demanding a bigger pay rise. The renewed protest erupted after the government said that the minimum wage would rise by 56.25% to 12,500 Taka a month from 1st of December, the first increase in five years. However, the hike was rejected by garment workers who have been demanding the minimum wage to be fixed as 23,000 Taka. Low wages have helped Bangladesh build its garment industry, with some 4,000 factories employing 4 million workers, supplying brands such as H&M and GAP. Readymade garments are a mainstay of the economy, accounting for almost 16% of GDP.
