Wainwright’s Coast to Coast Walk (CtoC) in Northern England, starts on the shores of the Irish Sea at St Bees (west coast). The route goes through the three UK National Parks of The Lake District, The Yorkshire Dales and The North York Moors. The walk finally finishes on the shores of the North Sea at Robin Hood’s Bay (east coast).
Depending on which source you use and if you take the high or low level alternative routes the length of the walk varies between 180 to 192 miles in length. Due to the length of the Coast to Coast walk, I have broken my journey into separate videos.
Part 1 – St Bees to Shap, Days 1 to 4 (this video),
This video covers from the start of the walk at St Bees’ through the Lake District National Park to Shap.
After leaving St Bees, I walked up the coast then turned inland and headed towards the Lake District through lovely valleys before arriving at Ennerdale Water and my first wild campsite of the trip. The Lake District was stunning, with wonderful views from the ridges, beautiful Tarns and wonderful wild camping spots (I had three). Finally I walked down Haweswater Reservoir and along it’s Beck to the campsite in Shap.
The weather was warm and sunny, with only eight-ish hours of rain on day 2.
I backpacked the whole of the Coast to Coast Walk in an easterly direction and my daily schedule was:-
Day 1 - St Bees to Ennerdale Valley (wild camped at the head of the valley near Black Sail Hut).
Day 2 - Ennerdale Valley to Grasmere (wild camped just north of Grasmere).
Day 3 - Grasmere to Haweswater Reservoir (wild camped in the Riggindale valley).
Day 4 - Haweswater Reservoir to Shap (camped at New Ing Farm Campsite).
