Why Nokia Fail? | MBA with Anvish
Nokia is a Finnish multinational telecommunications and consumer electronics company. It was once a leading player in the mobile phone industry and has a long history dating back to 1865 when it was founded as a pulp mill. Nokia expanded into various industries, including rubber, cables, and electronics, before gaining prominence in the telecommunications sector.
In the late 1990s and early 2000s, Nokia became the world's largest manufacturer of mobile phones. The company was known for its durability, reliability, and user-friendly designs, making Nokia phones highly popular and widespread. Nokia's most successful period came during the era of feature phones when it released iconic devices like the Nokia 3310, which achieved a legendary status.
However, Nokia faced significant challenges during the rise of smartphones. It struggled to adapt to the rapid shift in consumer preferences and technological advancements. Nokia's reliance on its Symbian operating system and failure to embrace touchscreens and app ecosystems put it at a disadvantage against competitors like Apple's iPhone and devices running Google's Android operating system.
As a result, Nokia's market share declined, and it faced financial difficulties. In 2011, Nokia made a strategic partnership with Microsoft and adopted the Windows Phone platform for its smartphones, hoping to regain market share. However, the Windows Phone devices failed to gain significant traction, and Nokia continued to lose ground to competitors.
In 2014, Nokia sold its mobile phone division to Microsoft, effectively exiting the smartphone market. However, the company maintained its presence in other areas such as network infrastructure, providing telecommunications equipment and services. Nokia has also ventured into emerging technologies like 5G, IoT (Internet of Things), and digital health.
In recent years, Nokia has undergone further transformations and has focused on diversifying its business. It has expanded into areas like network solutions, software, and licensing its brand to other manufacturers to produce Nokia-branded devices.
Overall, Nokia's story represents the challenges faced by a once-dominant player in the mobile phone industry and its efforts to adapt and reinvent itself in a rapidly changing market.
