In Texas, name changes are typically done in a family court. Often times, they are coupled with a divorce because a divorce is the only time you can change your name back to a maiden or previous name without charge.
Separate from a divorce decree, a name change would then be an “adult name change.” It may cost anywhere between several hundred dollars up to a thousand dollars. You must go to court, explain why you’re changing your name, and ask that your adult name be changed through a separate court order.
Additionally, if your child is under the age of one year, you can change their name at any time without having to go to court. All you need to do is file the appropriate documents with the state of Texas.
