This silent film covers President Harry S. Truman's trip to Brazil, 31 August - 20 September 1947. This is reel 1 of 5, depicting the president's journey from Washington, DC, to Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, 31 August - 1 September. It includes First Lady Bess Truman and Margaret Truman traveling with President Truman in their first flight aboard the presidential airplane "Independence." They are accompanied by the Brazilian Ambassador to the United States, Carlos Martins, and his wife, sculptor Maria Alves Martins. The Presidential party also includes Press Secretary Charlie Ross and Correspondence Secretary William D. Hassett. The plane stops briefly at Waller Field in Trinidad, where the presidential party is greeted by Governor Sir John Snow. The plane stops again at Belem, Brazil, before it finally lands at Galaeao Airport in Rio de Janeiro. Brazilian President Eurico Gaspar Dutra greets the presidential party, and they motorcade to the American Embassy.
