Charles Laughton had delivered the Gettysburgh Address in his 1935 movie "Ruggles of Red Gap," a comedy in which he played an English butler who'd been transported to the Wild West. The effectiveness of the speech resulted in Laughton recording it commercially for Columbia in Los Angeles on 6 January 1937 (78rpm disc).
