China said August 8 it was extending threatening military exercises surrounding Taiwan that have disrupted shipping and air traffic and substantially raised concerns about the potential for conflict in a region crucial to global trade. China has ignored calls to calm the tensions, and there was no immediate indication when it would end what amounts to a blockade. For further analysis on the heightened tensions between China and Taiwan, FRANCE 24 is joined by Jean-François Di Meglio, President of Asia Centre, Paris. Mr. Di Meglio believes the crisis will abate in the coming weeks or months because the US and China need each other. He also highlights the fact that "China is in a very difficult situation currently, both on the economic side and the diplomatic side." And so China needs the US more now than ever, explains Mr. Di Meglio.
