What goes best with a glass of wine on a night out? Maple Grove's latest business believes it's a blank canvas and palette of paint.
The Paint Pub is one part art class, one part social gathering. The new art studio cafe offers a full bar of alcoholic beverages and a featured painting each evening for participants to try their hand at creating.
"It's all about the fun, everybody has got an artist within them, and we just give them the modes to do it," said Jill Tufano, who opened the business with her husband, Tom, last month.
With two full-time instructors on staff, both with fine arts degrees, each session lasts around two and a half hours and includes step-by-step instructions for how to complete the featured acrylic painting. The Paint Pub provides the canvas, smocks, paint brushes, and the paint.
On a recent evening, a detailed picture of the Stone Arch Bridge and the Minneapolis skyline was the featured painting for a class of about 17 participants.
"A lot of people will say, 'well, how am i going to do that?' but our instructors are wonderful, we tell you what brush to use, what paints to use, how to mix them, and we take you step by step through painting the painting," said Tufano.
With some music in the background and a glass of wine nearby, participants are encouraged to relax and explore their creativity.
Eric and Katie Koch decided to try the Paint Pub as a way to celebrate their five year anniversary. As the night progressed, Eric jokingly said he was counting on his wife's painting to turn out as his own version would probably not be a display piece for the living room.
"Basement wall art, emphasis on the basement, less on the wall art," said Eric, with a smile.
