March. 8, 2022: U.S.-Japan Relations under Biden-Kishida: Entering a VUCA era?
How will U.S.-Japan relations evolve under the leadership of Joe Biden and Fumio Kishida, as compared with the Trump-Abe years,? We will review recent trends in U.S.-Japan relations, and the tasks at hand as geopolitics have entered a heightened VUCA (volatility, uncertainty, complexity, ambiguity) stage. How will the two elections in 2022 (Japan's Upper House election and US's mid-term election) affect the relationship between the two countries? Join Takako Hikotani, Professor of Political Science at Gakushuin, who will teach classes at UC San Diego’s GPS this coming quarter.

Bio:
Takako Hikotani is Professor at Gakushuin University International Centre, and Asia Society Japan, Policy Institute Fellow From 2016 to 2021, she was the Gerald L. Curtis Associate Professor of Modern Japanese Politics and Foreign Policy at Columbia University, and has previously taught at the National Defense Academy of Japan. Her publications (in English) include "The Japanese Diet and defense policy-making," International Affairs (2018), and "Trump's Gift to Japan: Time for Tokyo to Invest in the Liberal Order," Foreign Affairs (2017). She received her B.A. and M.A. from Keio University, M.A. from Stanford University, and Ph.D. from Columbia University where she was a President's Fellow.
Ulrike Schaede is Professor of Japanese Business at GPS, UC San Diego, and the Director of JFIT. Her research focuses on Japan’s changing corporate strategies, including business culture, change management, and business organization. Her 2020 book “The Business Reinvention of Japan” analyzes how Japanese companies are responding to the rise of China and the changing global competition.
