The latest flashpoint between the Centre and Congress arises from the appointment of former SC judge V Ramasubramanian as the Chairman of the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC). Congress leaders Rahul Gandhi and Mallikarjun Kharge have issued a dissent note, claiming that mutual consultation and consensus were ignored during the process. Despite a meeting between PM Modi, Gandhi, Kharge, Amit Shah, and Om Birla on December 18, the Congress leaders proposed Justice Fali Nariman and Justice KM Joseph for the role, arguing their appointments would better represent India’s pluralistic society. This dispute also coincides with ongoing tensions between the Centre and the Opposition over Ambedkar-related issues.
