Yes, there really is more to Oktoberfest than beer and urine filled lederhosen. I was proven ignorant when I realized that the festival has so much depth to it.
In America, we don our best Spirit Halloween lederhosen or beer girl outfits and embarrass ourselves by consuming enough IPAs and processed meats to kill an entire frat house. The whole time not understanding to origins or traditions of Oktoberfest.
The Wiesn is what it is known as locally and that is an abbreviation for the field where the fest takes place. Oktoberfest came into existence from a wedding reception for King Ludwig. It grew into a public event and 2023 was 188th edition.
The math doesn’t math as there was no Oktoberfest for much of WWI and WWII. Also during disease outbreaks and of course COVID.
Join me as I explore the books and crannies of the festival and uncover things that only the locals know about. While this is my chosen experience, there are so many ways to enjoy the wiesn and let this serve as a guide or at least an inspiration.
Now put on your best drinking hat and let’s Oktoberfest! Prost!
