November 24, 2024, severe flooding impacted Pontypridd as the River Taff burst its banks due to relentless rainfall brought by Storm Bert. This extreme weather event caused significant damage, with water levels in the river recorded at nearly four times their typical levels, peaking at 5.32 meters—one of the highest ever seen in the area.
Between 200 and 300 homes and businesses were inundated,causing significant damage and disruption.
The Abercynon Feeder Pipe Footbridge was completely washed away.
Major roads and highways were submerged, disrupting transportation and isolating affected neighborhoods. The town’s flood defenses were overwhelmed, particularly in areas deemed at medium risk, such as Berw Road, where no formal barriers exist. Surface water accumulation from heavy rainfall further exacerbated the flooding by overloading drainage systems.
