Grand Prix 4 was released 21st June 2002 – exactly 20 years to the day – and it shook up the world of virtual racing simulators.
We enjoy the current Formula 1 games by EA Sports and Codemasters, plus we're eagerly anticipating F1 Manager 2022 and the current season update for F1 Mobile Racing. But, here's why Geoff Crammond's Grand Prix 4 was the last true F1 simulator.
An official representation of the 2001 season – dominated by Michael Schumacher and Ferrari – the PC-only title (although an Xbox conversion was rumoured) featured dynamic weather with a drying line, heat haze, fully controllable pitstops and track marshals that pushed your car out of harms way. All features that would either match or surpass contemporary racing titles to this day
Sadly, parent company Infogrames shut down developer MicroProse soon after the platform's release, despite it being a critical success. Planned patched never materialised, and some game-breaking bugs obviously remain to this day.
Will there be an official F1-licenced simulator like this again? We certainly hope so!
