(9 Oct 2019) Syrians in the north-eastern border town of Ras al-Ayn protested against Turkey's military offensive on Wednesday.
Turkey later launched a military operation against Kurdish fighters in northeastern Syria after US forces pulled back from the area, with a series of airstrikes hitting a town on Syria's northern border.
Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan announced the start of the campaign, which followed an abrupt decision Sunday by US President Donald Trump that American troops would step aside to allow for the operation.
Trump's move represented a shift in US policy that essentially abandoned the Syrian Kurdish fighters who have been America's only allies on the ground in Syria. They were long-time US allies in the fight against the Islamic State group.
People in the Syrian border town of Ras al-Ayn demonstrated in the street earlier on Wednesday before military operations started, calling on the international community to intervene and stop any attack.
"We call on the United Nations and the international organizations to intervene and stop any attack and barbaric acts against our land," said one woman.
Later in the day, Turkish planes carried out airstrikes in Ras al-Ayn as soon as the attack was announced by Erdogan. Following the attack, cars raced to safety, although it was not clear if they were leaving the town or heading away from border areas.
