Yesterday the World Health Organization, in partnership with the UN, released one of the most detailed reports on global ageism ever published. More than 200 pages, the report covers how ageism is manifesting in both younger AND older populations. It also outlines what evidence-based strategies that work to prevent ageism.
Age bias and discrimination are felt across the age spectrum. According to the report, in Europe age discrimination spikes at age 20 and again at 59.
When younger people experience discrimination, it is frustrating and belittling.
When older people experience discrimination, it is frustrating and belittling.
Age is not a predictive lens for competence or potential. It cannot determine skills, abilities, intelligence, relationship building, collaboration or communication techniques.
Just like you can’t get any of that from race, gender, disability, sexual orientation, religious preference… or any other dimension of diversity.

The most effective use of these strategies is altogether.
