Würzburg makes a delightful destination for a day or two - - not just the few hours recommended by tour guides.
While much of the town has been re-built since the destruction of WWII, the beauty and general character of the city have been retained. The Würzburg Residenz (palace) has been authentically re-constructed.
The Marienberg Fortress retains it's regal position. (A fortress has been here since the bronze age!) Now the fortress, in addition to being a fascinating castle, is home to an excellent collection of Franconian art.
Sadly, a buildings have modernized or only semi-restored, but the town is vital, fun, and filled with architectural and artistic wonders.
