(11 Dec 2013) A Dutch couple freed after months in captivity in Yemen said on Wednesday that they received good treatment from their abductors.
Dutch journalist Judith Spiegel and her partner Boudewijn Berendsen spoke to media early on Wednesday at Sanaa airport as they prepared for their trip back home.
Spiegel told reporters that they were treated "the Yemeni way" by their abductors.
"Also very, very nice was the support of all the Yemeni people, including Yemeni media, including all of kinds of organisations, from the North, from the South, from everywhere in the country," she said.
"Which is one of the reasons why today we are standing here, still loving Yemen very very much. Except for a few bad people of course," she added.
Spiegel did not provide details about who was behind the abduction or the circumstances surrounding the kidnapping.
She said she hoped that one day Yemen would be safe enough to return to.
The couple were snatched in Sanaa on June 8 and were recently released close to the Dutch embassy in the Yemeni capital.
Berendsen called for media discretion in reporting kidnapping cases in Yemen.
"Don't try to make guesses and bring rumours in the world. Which can also hurt the interest of people who are still being kidnapped," he said.
Abductions are frequent in Yemen, an impoverished nation where armed tribesmen and al-Qaida-linked militants take hostages to swap for prisoners or cash.
The Dutch government said it never pays ransom to free hostages.
