If we wait until we are completely pain-free to start to exercise then we may never start at all
It is okay to work into pain and discomfort and this is to be expected as part of our rehab process
When is it safe to work into pain with a patient?
1 - The pain is manageable
2 - The pain is 4/5 out of 10
3 - The patient is stable the next day and pain goes back to normal levels
4 - we have stable function, you can move with no extremes of pain, movement is not compromised negatively
When to cut back or to stop on exercise
1 - severe or unusual pain
2 - pain or swelling that gets worse
3 - A large change in function
4 - already pushing too hard
Working with pain is to be expected the emphasis is to reiterate to the patient they may be sore but they are safe.
