The province of DKI Jakarta, located on the northwest coast of Java Island, has rapidly expanded over the years, absorbing many villages in the process. In fact, Jakarta is a collection of villages known as kampung, which are now connected by major roads and superhighways.
One aspect of the local experience is that you may drive down a wide avenue one minute and then find yourself squeezed into a small street with dozens of cars and motorcycles the next. Jakarta has grown into a Megapolitan city due to its numerous suburbs. As a result, when visiting Jakarta, it is best to invest in a good map or rely on GPS to get around.
