Climate adversities are increasingly impacting the stability and security of many regions of the world with far-reaching consequences. Developing countries most vulnerable to climate change, like Pakistan, are facing periodic episodes of climate induced devastation that severely impact their fragile economies and result in socio-economic outcomes that affect the most vulnerable communities within the countries. Climate change is a unique global challenge because it is unrestrained by borders, often resulting in regional impacts that affect the lives and livelihoods of citizens across regions. It is also unique because in many instances the devastating effects of climate change are being borne by countries that often contribute the least to global greenhouse gas emissions. Despite 27 COP sessions and a rising awareness on the threat climate change poses to the world, lack of political will remains a key stumbling block in shaping global, regional and domestic responses to climate change.
This session focused on how we can ensure greater political will and international action on climate change ensuring that the implementation of the global agenda on climate results in the necessary commitment that is required to meet this shared global challenge.
The session also discussed climate adaptation measures the world needs to take before it’s too little too late. How can the global community accelerate our collective response towards moving away from fossil fuels, increasing financial support for climate adaptation, green financing and its future, methane emissions, climate resilient agriculture, the role of green energy and public transport, and disaster risk management? In the recent past, infrastructural losses caused by the adversities are huge for any developing country to bear, how can the world respond to this in a more meaningful way? Will the impacts of climate change, such as food and water scarcity, result in strategic countries in ways that way impact inter-state conflict in the coming decades?
