The Bristol Bombay, a single-wing aircraft developed in 1935, was outdated by the time it entered service in 1939 and was mainly used for secondary tasks such as transporting wounded soldiers and supplies. It had a limited production of only 51 units and was powered by two Bristol Pegasus XXII engines, with a maximum speed of 310 km/h and a cruising speed of 260 km/h.
Despite its underwhelming performance, the Bristol Bombay played an important role in transport missions during World War II, including transporting the Greek royal family to Egypt and tens of thousands of wounded soldiers. However, it also experienced tragedies, such as the death of Major General William Gott, the highest-ranking British commander killed in action in World War II, when his aircraft was attacked by German fighters.
