Shared lane markings ("sharrows") are a street marking in the California Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices. Their intent is to show drivers and people on bikes alike where a bicyclist may need to be positioned in traffic lanes that are too narrow to be shared by a bicycle and car side-by-side, in accordance with a bicyclist's use of a full travel lane per CVC 21202(a)(3).
Unfortunately, drivers in Los Angeles do not understand what sharrows mean, and sharrows do not reduce negative and dangerous interactions between people riding bikes and car drivers.
