STORYLINE:
Hundreds of gays and lesbians marched through Bucharest in a show of pride on Saturday.
Thousands of people gathered along the two-mile (three-kilometre) route while some spectators cheered and others jeered.
"I hope that Romanians could finally realise and understand what this kind of life means for us," said Denis, a famous Romanian gay personality.
"I'm here from Germany to support the gay and lesbian movement here in Romania so that everybody can have equal rights," added Axel Schweigel, the Metropolitan community pastor of Stuttgart.
Hundreds of police patrolled the march.
The atmosphere was tense, and police said 43 people were detained in connection with the march.
Michael Cashman, a Labour Member of European Parliament (MEP) for the British West Midlands addressed those participating in the march.
"I want to thank the police who are here today, but you know what, we should be able to march and be ourselves without having to have the police march alongside us," said Cashman.
Two were charged with carrying knives.
At a similar event last year, about 140 people were arrested.
Earlier on Saturday, supporters of the New Right anti-gay movement marched to protest against homosexuality.
The Romanian Orthodox Church, the dominant church in the country, opposes homosexuality but the government decriminalised homosexuality in 2001.
