The Africa Roundtable is a new forum for decision-makers from politics, business and society on European-African cooperation. The current urgent questions and challenges of the neighboring continents as well as partnership approaches and models of future cooperation are discussed. Renowned partners, such as the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development, the Robert Bosch Foundation, the Mo Ibrahim Foundation and the McKinsey Global Institute support the innovative forum.
The Africa Roundtable on 9 June 2021, took place with a focus on “Covid-19 Recovery” and “Green Transition.” Covid-19 hit Africa and Europe hard on many levels. Rebuilding a more resilient economy is paramount after the Covid-19 pandemic ends. At the same time, the crisis offers an opportunity for a green transition for both continents. This major challenge can best be met by the two continents working together. How reconstruction can be shaped was discussed at The Africa Roundtable.
The importance of the topic is clear from the high-ranking participants from politics and business. The highest representative of Germany, Federal President Frank-Walter Steinmeier, opened The Africa Roundtable, together with the President of the Republic of Senegal, Macky Sall. The Director General of the World Trade Organization (WTO), Dr. Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, and the candidates for Chancellor, Annalena Baerbock and Armin Laschet, as well as the Vice President of the European Commission, Frans Timmermans, and the Commissioner of the African Union, Dr. Amani Abou-Zeid, have shared their insights. The Africa Roundtable was moderated by Wolfgang Ischinger, Chairman of the Munich Security Conference.
