Oil Furnace Maintenance
OIL FURNACE MAINTENANCE SCHEDULE
Oil-burning furnaces need more maintenance than gas furnaces due to soot and grime build-up that comes naturally in an oil-powered model. Your oil furnace should be cleaned and checked twice each heating season and serviced by a professional each fall.
DIY OIL FURNACE INSPECTION CHECKLIST
Here are 3 things you can do between professional inspection appointments to make sure your unit is running smoothly. However, if you’re not comfortable working on or near an oil furnace motor, you can always call your Trane Comfort Specialist™ and reduce the risk of error or damage to your unit.
1. LOOK
Look for signs of black soot around your furnace. Soot outside the furnace itself could mean that the unit is burning more than oil. You should also look at the smoke coming from your chimney while the furnace is burning; black smoke could indicate that the oil is not being burned completely.
2. LISTEN
Listen for any unusual vibrating or rattling sounds coming from the furnace blower. If you notice any of these signs, contact your local Trane Comfort Specialist™.
3. CHANGE
Remember to change the air filter in your furnace as often as recommended by your operator's manual, or more frequently if you own pets.
OIL FURNACE SERVICE APPOINTMENT CHECKLIST
As part of your oil furnace maintenance appointment, you can expect your Trane Comfort Specialist to complete the same tasks as a during a gas furnace inspection, but also include these additional steps. Because an oil furance’s working parts are connected to combustible fuels, we recommend letting a trained HVAC professional handle these inspections to avoid any chance of damage.
Inspect oil burner.
Clean heat exchanger.
Inspect and replace oil nozzle.
Replace oil filter.
Inspect flame sensor.
Clean burner fan.
Check vacuum readings.
Oil motor if applicable.
Check fuel lines for leaks.
HOW TO CLEAN YOUR OIL FURNACE
Turn off your furnace, including the gas line, and wait for it to cool.
Then, using a vacuum with a long hose attachment, clean dust from around the furnace. Removing this dust can help reduce allergens in the air and prevent burned dust particles from circulating through the house.
Vacuum out the burner and blower cavities.
Blow dust off the pilot. Use a straw to direct air to the exact spot and make sure pilot is off.
