The 2024 Renault Espace marks a significant shift in design and function, transitioning from its iconic minivan form to a spacious seven-seat SUV. This new model, the sixth generation of the Espace, has a long and rich history dating back to 1984. The Espace IV had a successful 13-year lifespan before being replaced by a more crossover-like model in 2015. The newest Espace, however, departs entirely from its minivan roots.

The Espace is essentially a long-wheelbase variant of the Austral compact crossover with minor design modifications. Contrary to the trend of vehicles growing in size and weight, this latest Espace is 5.5 inches shorter and four hundred seventy four pounds lighter than its predecessor. It also rides lower, and interestingly, it boasts a more spacious third row. This model offers flexibility in seating with a standard seven-seat configuration, but it also can be converted to a five-seat setup if desired.

Cargo space is one of the key highlights of the new Espace. Accessible via a power tailgate, the cargo area fluctuates between 5.6 cubic feet when all seven seats are occupied and 64 cubic feet when configured as a five-seater with the second row folded. With the rear seats pushed all the way forward in the five-seat model, 27 cubic feet of space is available. Additionally, an extra 1.37 cubic feet of storage can be found scattered throughout the cabin for smaller items.

Optional features aim to enhance the already spacious interior of the Espace. One such feature is a massive glass roof that amplifies the feeling of space inside the cabin. The SUV also offers two wheel size options, 19 or 20 inches, based on the trim level. The top trim, known as the Esprit Alpine, sits above the base Techno and the midlevel Iconic. Even the most basic model includes a 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster and a 12-inch touchscreen, while a 9.3-inch head-up display is available at an extra cost. To ensure devices remain charged, a wireless charging pad, two 12 volt sockets, and two USB-C ports for each row are included.

Engine-wise, the Espace offers a significant departure from its predecessors, doing away with the diesel option. Instead, it comes equipped with a turbocharged 1.3-liter gasoline engine complemented by a pair of electric motors, forming a full hybrid system. The three-cylinder unit delivers one hundred thirty-one horsepower and one hundred fifty-one pound-feet of torque, while the primary electric motor contributes an additional 68 horsepower and one hundred fifty-one pound-feet. A second electric motor acts as a starter generator, providing 25 horsepower and 37 pound feet. In total, the hybrid system offers up to 200 horsepower.

The hybrid powertrain provides the 2024 Espace with significant fuel efficiency. Renault claims that it has managed to reduce fuel consumption by up to 40 percent, down to 4.7 liters per 100 kilometers.

The 2024 Renault Espace also introduces a more advanced multi-link rear suspension, setting it apart from most mainstream SUVs in its segment. One unique feature is its rear-wheel steering, which decreases the turning circle to a compact 10.4 meters. Without this system, the turning circle would be 11.6 meters. This rear-wheel steering system operates by steering the rear wheels up to five degrees in the opposite direction to the front wheels at speeds of up to 30 mph (or 50 kilometers per hour). At higher speeds, the rear wheels steer up to one degree in the same direction as the front ones, improving stability.

In terms of design, the new Espace resembles a stretched version of the Austral, featuring the same C-shaped LED headlights and a wide grille adorned with the new Renault logo. The SUV appears more boxy compared to the Austral, showcasing a longer rear overhang and a more upright tailgate.
