Dubrovnik was captured by a couple of mature travellers.
Dubrovnik is a city in southern Croatia fronting the Adriatic Sea. It's known for its distinctive Old Town, encircled with massive stone walls completed in the 16th century. Its well-preserved buildings range from baroque St. Blaise Church to Renaissance Sponza Palace and Gothic Rector’s Palace, now a history museum. Paved with limestone, the pedestrianized Stradun (or Placa) is lined with shops and restaurants.
We begin at the Airbnb in Dubrovnick. The outlook from our window was blue sky and a deep blue sea.
Unfortunately day two saw us waking up to grey cold damp conditions. Visiting the museums was very rewarding.
Day three we decided to continue with a museum visit strategy at first but by mid-morning conditions had improved sufficiently to allow us to do the Old Town Wall walk. It is certainly a highlight of any visit to Dubrovnik. Great photo opportunities ensured we captured the great views.
On day four having booked a tour to Montenegro we were very pleased to wake up to clear blue skies. The long 12 hour day was rewarded with some magnificent coastal scenery around the harbour of Kotor and the coastline near Budva.
On our return to Dubrovnick, on dusk, we witnessed a great sunset and the city lights from a high vantage point looking down on the town.
Day five we commenced to walk down to old town intent on visiting more museums to escape the rain. The rain ceased and sky cleared suggesting that we might be able to schedule the cable car ascent to Fort Imperial. On arrival at the cable car ticket office we were advised that the cable car was not running due to the weather however it was expected to start in about thirty minutes. The delayed start worked to our advantage as we avoided the queues and were right at the head of the line when the service commenced.
Fort Imperial was a significant defensive post during the 1990 war with Serbian and Montenegran forces. The museum contains a very extensive photographic record of the war as well as a very moving presentation recording the impact of the war on the civilian population.
After descending on the cable car we investigated the option of taking a boat ride out to Lokum Island however the service was not running due to the conditions. At this point we decided to take a local bus ride out to the end of the line and see some of the out of town coastal beach resorts etc. This proved again to be a good call as we were able to enjoy a one and half hour walk back to town via a coastal walking path. Along the way we passed a number of resort bathing beaches and a number of small marinas as well as getting a great view of the port from the opposite bank to where the cruise ships berth.
Day seven we decided to take a local bus to Cavtat. The journey took 40 minutes and only cost 25 Kuna (5 AUD) per person one-way. It once again proved to be a wise decision as the weather in Dubrovnick was very bleak. We spent about 2 hours walking two very scenic coastal paths and managed to get back to the village centre just as a thunderstorm erupted.
Back in Dubrovnick the weather had cleared and we managed to squeeze in another 1 hour walk exploring some of the back streets of the outer suburbs near our residence. All in all, another good varied day of site seeing and meeting interesting people.
