Our Wild Farming Life is what happens when you follow your dreams of living on the land; a story of how two people became farmers – and how they learned to make a living from it, their way.
Lynn and Sandra left their friends, family and jobs in England to travel north to Scotland to find a small piece of land they could call their own. They had no money, no plan and no experience in farming. They had in mind keeping a few chickens, a kitchen garden and renting out some camping space, but instead, they fell in love with Lynbreck Croft – 150 acres of wild Scottish Highlands filled with opportunity and beauty, shrouded by the Cairngorms mountains.
In Our Wild Farming Life, Lynn and Sandra recount their experiences as they rebuild their new home and work out what kind of farmers they want to be. They learn how to work with Highland cattle, become part of the crofting community and begin to truly understand how they can farm in harmony with nature to produce wonderful food for themselves and the people around them. Through efforts like these, Lynn and Sandra have been able to combine regenerative farming practices with old crofting traditions to keep their own personal values intact.
In this online event, we were delighted to welcomed Lynn to discuss their experience and their approach in the context of the Regenerative Food and Farming programmes here at Dartington.
ABOUT FARMING FOR THE FUTURE
A thought-provoking series with leading practitioners in regenerative food and farming, co-hosted by Chelsea Green Publishing UK and Dartington Trust.
The ongoing global pandemic has exposed the frailties and shortcomings of current food production systems and has made it abundantly clear that things cannot go on the way they are. Through in-depth discussions with a number of leading voices in regenerative growing, this unique, inspiring series will show how small-scale farmers, ranchers and growers are working to restore our shared earth.
Participants will come away with action points to create more self-sustaining spaces– be it a garden, a smallholding or farm, as well as having the opportunity to ask questions during each event. The events are hosted by Nathan Einbinder agroecologist and programme lead on the new undergraduate programme in Regenerative Food and Farming which starts at Schumacher College in September.
The future of regenerative food and farming is here – because what we grow matters.
ABOUT LYNN CASSELLS AND SANDRA BAER
Lynn and Sandra met while working as rangers for the National Trust and soon realised that they shared a dream to live closer to the land. They bought Lynbreck Croft in March 2016 – 150 acres of pure Scottishness – with no experience in farming but a huge passion for nature and the outdoors. Now they raise their own animals, grow their own produce and are as self-sufficient as they can be.
