The Buddha narrates some of his previous lives while on his arduous path to enlightenment in the vast collection of Buddhist morality tales known as the Jataka tales.
Despite being a part of the Pali Canon, the Buddhist version of the Bible, and including passages attributed to the Buddha, they are more of a folktale than a religious text, and their appeal is mostly due to their entertainment value rather than their theological content.
The Bodhisatta (what a Buddha-to-be is called) is commonly born as an animal and he usually overcomes challenging circumstances and solves difficulties in inventive and humorous ways. Aesop's fables and the Jataka stories even share some story points.
