I had the opportunity to work on a project in Padang, West Sumatra. I went there three times, for a total of 6 weeks.
Padang is a coastal city, only few kilometers away from the seaport, which makes it a city of trades and an entrance to the western part of Sumatra. It is well known for its culture and history, and more importantly, the cuisine.
It only took 10 minutes to get me from my hotel to Padang Beach, which made it really convenient for me to take a stroll almost on the daily. Luckily, I was summer, so I was blessed with bright orange sunset and clear sky that seems to change color every day.
The beach, or commonly known by locals as Taplau (Tapi Lauik, literally means the sea shore), is always swarmed by both locals and tourists in the evening. It is also close to the city center, so often times I took a walk during the sunset and carried on to get dinner or hang out at the malls or coffee shops. This video is a montage from some of my visits there.
Recommended things to do at Padang Beach:
1. Aloha coconut ice cream, in the eastern end of the boulevard. A dessert of coconut ice cream, topped with shaved coconut and various toppings, served on a coconut shell. Cheap and refreshing, it draws youngsters from all over town.
2. Fresh seafood. There are many restaurants, but the most famous ones are called Fuja and Ikan Bakar Khatib Sulaiman. The fish and seafoods are always fresh, supplied by the nearby fishmongers. Cooked in authentic West Sumatran spices, the dishes have distinctive flavors that can’t be found in other regions.
3. Sunset hunting. The sun sets at around 18:30, but people have gathered since 5 pm. There are playgrounds for kids, and some teenagers ca often be seen catching waves on their surfboards. You can sit by the beach, or more comfortably, at the relatively cheap cafes on the boulevard. Make sure to bring your cameras to get some materials for your Instagram feed.
4. City landmarks. There are two major landmarks along the shore. Monumen Merpati Perdamaian (the Peace Dove Monument), in the shape of a dove origami, erected in 2016 as part of Multilateral Naval Exercise Komodo. The other is Monumen IORA, a commemoration of the 2017 Indian Ocean Rim Association Summit. There are also several spots that were purposely built to take selfies at.
