The Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank: An interview with Sir Danny Alexander
Why you should watch: The AIIB was set up in 2015, at China's instigation, to fund major infrastructure projects in Asia - a region that stretches at least as far as Oman and Turkey. The UK was one of the first out-of-region countries to join, as part of David Cameron's policy of opening up to China - incurring Washington's displeasure by doing so. Its reward was a key role for the former Chief Secretary to the Treasury in Coalition days - Danny (now Sir Danny) Alexander. The Bank holds its Annual Meeting on July 28-29, with the Covid crisis, the 'digital divide' and plans for further private sector cooperation high on the agenda. What is likely to be skated round quite adroitly is the current brouhaha between the US and Beijing - but, as this discussion makes clear, the AIIB is a major player in Asia, with big plans for the future.
Moderators: Andrew Hilton (Director, CSFI) and Leighton Hughes (FinTech Lead, CSFI)
Panellist: Sir Danny Alexander is Vice-President and Corporate Secretary at the AIIB in Beijing. He is a former Secretary of State for Scotland (he was MP for Inverness) and Chief Secretary to the Treasury in the Conservative/Lib Dem Coalition. He is also a former chief of staff to Nick Clegg. Hailing from the Highlands and Islands, he read PPE at St Anne's, Oxford.
