Hungary's Prime Minister Viktor Orban claimed on Friday that European Union leaders, specifically Ursula von der Leyen and Manfred Weber, are attempting to “overthrow” his government. In remarks to Hungary's state broadcaster, Orban stated, “They announced that they wanted another government. Because this national, sovereign Hungarian government is not good for them.”
Orban faces increasing isolation within the EU, primarily due to his stance on the war in Ukraine and allegations of undermining Hungary’s democratic checks and balances during his 14-year tenure. He accused Brussels of seeking to install a socialist member from the People’s Party in the future Hungarian government to advance EU objectives.
Two years ago, the EU Parliament labeled Hungary under Orban as “a hybrid regime of electoral autocracy.” Despite this, Orban recently formed the Patriots for Europe group, uniting far-right parties and becoming the third-largest faction in the EU legislature.
