1. Cafe Coffee Day founder VG Siddhartha, who is the son-in-law of former Karnataka Chief Minister SM Krishna, was found dead this morning, 36 hours after he went missing from a bridge near Mangaluru in Karnataka.
A massive search operation involving multiple agencies was on since Monday evening, when Siddhartha went missing. The body had washed ashore the Netravati river near Ullal in Mangaluru and was fished out by local fishermen at around 6:30 this morning.
The Mangaluru police chief said an investigation was underway to determine whether Siddhartha took his own life. Days before he went missing, Siddhartha, 60, had reportedly written a letter to board members and employees of Cafe Coffee Day. The letter alleges harassment by an income tax officer and expresses regret for not being able to create "the right profitable business".
While the letter, which reads like a parting message, and the recovery of the body indicate towards suicide by the businessman, the police are yet to official confirm any such report.
2. A letter by the Unnao rape survivor alleging grave danger to her will be taken up by the Supreme Court on Thursday, three days after the girl was critically wounded in a car crash that she says was planned by the man she has accused, jailed BJP lawmaker Kuldeep Sengar.
Chief Justice of India Ranjan Gogoi expressed his displeasure at the fact that a letter written by the victim's family on July 12 was not placed before him by the court registry.
The CJI had asked for a report on the letter sent on July 12, which has become even more significant after the accident that involved a truck with its number plate wiped.
In this letter dated July 12, the mother and sisters of Unnao rape survivor had said they were being intimidated by the accused and were also threatened with implication in false cases.
Citing concerns of their safety, the letter also implored upon the CJI to order an FIR into incidents of intimidation and seek report from the police officials concerned.
3. Making instant triple talaq a criminal offence, the contentious bill was passed in Rajya Sabha on Tuesday with 99 members voting in favour and 84 voting against. The bill follows a Supreme Court verdict of 2017 declaring instant triple talaq as unconstitutional.
The Upper House earlier rejected an opposition sponsored motion to send the bill to a Rajya Sabha Select Committee with 100 votes against it as compared to 84 in favour. While BJD supported the legislation, JD-U and AIADMK walked out, lowering the majority mark which normally stands at 121. The ruling NDA has 107 members in the 242-member Rajya Sabha. The NDA was also helped by the absence of some members of SP and BSP as well as those of TRS and YSR-Congress.
The Triple Talaq bill could not make it through the Upper House earlier this year during the first term of Prime Minister Narendra Modi's government, although it was passed by Lok Sabha.
The Bill was again passed by the Lok Sabha last week amid a walkout by several opposition parties including the Congress and the Trinamool Congress.
The opposition parties say in its current form, the proposed law could be misused to harass Muslims and wanted it to be reviewed by a parliamentary committee.
