Recently Nornvin sent me a 1500W battery pack, but instead of doing a review I figured I'd build something with it! I pulled out an old sailboat hull I was hoarding, stuck on some old solar panels and a cheap electric trolling motor, and away it went!
Originally I was planning to do a canopy / Jungle Cruise style boat, but @PeterSripol already did that, so I figured I'd make something different! Also I wasn't sure how much that would affect the center of gravity. Since Ax-Man Surplus had some lightweight fuel tank pod things, I used those for outriggers.
This is probably one of my more successful projects, at least on the first try! Usually my DIY prototypes need a little more polishing and refining, but so far the solar boat seems pretty solid. I can run the 12v motor on setting 3 (about 3mph) with just the lighter plug on the Nornvin unit, or I can go up to level 5 (5mph) using the jumper cables (I do have to keep hitting the boost button if I do that).
This is a fun boat for small lakes and areas where gas engines are banned. We might take it out on some other Twin Cities spots in the future!
