A march is going on right now in Akron by a group of people that are demanding unity and justice for Jayland Walker, who was shot and killed by eight officers amid an overnight chase more than three months ago.
Groups participating in the Monday march at Grace Park include The Freedom BLOCK, Akron Urban League, Akron NAACP and St. Ashworth Temple.
“This march will focus on unifying the community and creating a city where all Akronites can thrive and live safely,” organizers said in a press release. “This march will also be an opportunity for participants to register to vote in order to use their collective power at the ballot box in next month’s midterm elections.”
Walker was shot and killed on June 27 when eight Akron police officers opened fire amid an overnight chase. Police say Walker had fired a shot at one point during the vehicle pursuit, but was unarmed at the time officers opened fire as the chase continued on foot. A gun was later found in Walker's vehicle, according to police.
