—SUBSCRIBE FOR MORE MIXES— [Tracklist Below] [Lock In #054]
After a year and a half, Kamer brings the Crucial Recordings crew back onto Lock In. Label creator and leader, Sleeper, has been busy since the first Crucial mix on Lock In (which coincided with the release of Crucial004), releasing ten more EPs from a range of producers, all at the top of their game. In this mix, Kamer brings their entire discography (so far) into perspective, revealing its inter-connectedness, themes and progression.
Haunting is a key word in defining the Crucial sound. The samples of broken, eerie melodies that coax you through each track, combined with a mysterious percussive palette that is as wide reaching and spacious as it is claustrophobic, creates a signature sound that could have your mind wandering alone through the creepy world of Silent Hill, or meditating in the dark, incense-filled prayer rooms of Nepal.
Haunting doesn’t quite cut it though, because that would describe a ghost with no form, or substance, which is quite the opposite with this record label’s music. Beneath the off-key wisps of after-life atmosphere, like a writhing ocean whose infinitely dark depths hold countless sunken treasures and forgotten ships, the basslines roll, thick and treacherous. Does that analogy evoke enough for you?
These sonic alchemists love to experiment. None show it more clearly than Oxóssi in his Esher EP, where the instruments of medieval kings and queens are transported through time, arpeggiated and strung out over thrashing, vampiric beats. Sleeper’s work with D£DW8 (which opens this mix) allows the previously unspoken voice of Crucial to be heard. It’s filthy, angry and unforgiving, but not without a touch of humour to balance the scales.
What comes through is a feeling that the producers care for the genre, some bringing in roots, dub elements and others shedding light into new rooms. With samples that advise you to keep your options open by seeking education; harmonising your chakras by hitting the dabs; and honestly questioning if Johnny is a ghost; the themes and thoughts that the songs provoke are plentiful. Rider Shafique closes the mix with spoken word that coalesces with the mysterious horns rising from the depths of the ocean.
The latest release seems to be a milestone for the label, simply titled, Crucial EP Volume one. It’s this milestone aspect of the release that spurred Kamer to celebrate the label, blending it all together to promote and indulge in the Crucial Recordings sound.
