The National Bureau for Non-Governmental organisations has closed down 54 NGOs for various reasons, including not submitting audited annual accounts and operating with expired permits. According to the bureau's executive director, Stephen Okello, the organisations affected include, lawyer Nicholas Opiyo’s Chapter Four, the Citizens' coalition for electoral democracy and the Africa Institute for Energy Governance (AFIEGO).
