What would differentiate an emotionally immature parent from a parent who struggles with Borderline and/or Narcissistic Personality Disorders?
Why does it matter whether we call it "Emotionally Immature" vs Borderline or Narcissism?
This video uses 10 of the criteria listed in Dr. Lindsay Gibson's book "Adult Children of Emotionally Immature Parents...." as a jumping off point to examine what Borderline or Narcissistic traits or experiences might look like to a child raised by parents who are more than immature, but actually struggle with a personality disorder instead.
Does it really matter? Yes!
It matters, because for children raised by parents with disorders like BPD or NPD we can see significant areas of Complex PTSD and/or PTSD, life long difficulties in relationships and mental health, challenges in dealing with these parents as adults, chronic health problems, parenting difficulties, etc - which go above and beyond setting boundaries, grieving the relationship, letting go, etc which are often advised as techniques for healing from Emotionally Immature parents.
