Quite a while since I seen a sight of a Class 50 (Hoover) on the main line, and today was the moment for me to get a bit of 50 thrash by not one but two class 50s. 50007 Hercules in BR Blue and 50049 Defiance in BR Large Loco Blue hauling ‘The Torbay and Dart Explorer’ ran by Pathfinder Tours to Kingswear from Burton on Trent with the 50’s being in charge from Worcester Shrub Hill.
I decided to film then at Ram Hill near Westerleigh Junction on the outskirts of Yate on the approach to Bristol Parkway and as you can see, the overhead poles are now clearly visible and if I’m honest it doesn’t look pretty. With the train running 25 mins late the 50’s needed to get growling and the sound was absolutely brilliant which would have being the sound of the 1970s-1980s when these diesels were a common sight in the south west of England.
In the evening, I went to see the train in almost pitch darkness climbing Filton Bank filmed near the station, but it went disastrously wrong. The weather didn’t help as occasional rain and thick cloud meant the light was almost none even a lamppost light didn’t really help. The train went through but the 50’s were idle which was a massive disappointment as I was hoping for full thrash from the two as they crested Filton Bank. Then just as I put my stuff away, my tripod out of nothing gave way and I’m now in a precarious position of either fixing the tripod that I currently have or getting a new one. GOD HELP ME!
