The site has been occupied since the Neolithic era, but according to legend the city was founded during Antiquity by Idomeneo, king of Crete. Pliny the Elder attributes the founding of Gallipoli to the Gallic tribe of the Senones, but the origin of the city is more likely due to the people of the Messapians.
However, Gallipoli was an important city in Magna Graecia, with a large territory that included what is now Porto Cesareo. In 265 BC. J-C, the city sided with Pyrrhus and Taranto in their fight against Rome. After the defeat of Pyrhus, Gallipoli was relegated to the simple rank of a colony by the Romans (it nevertheless later became a municipium), who built a fortress there.
At the beginning of the Middle Ages the city was probably plundered by the Vandals and the Goths. Rebuilt by the Byzantines, it then experienced a period of economic growth due to its advantageous geographical position on the Ionian Sea.
The city then became the possession of the Popes, which made it one of the centers of struggle against Greek monasticism, still dominant in southern Italy at the time.
After numerous raids by Muslim corsairs, always repelled, the city was stormed and occupied by them from 915 to 945, then taken over by the Byzantine army which restructured and reinforced the fortress.
In the 11th century Gallipoli was conquered by the Normans after a year of siege, and in 1268 it was reconquered and destroyed by Charles I of Anjou, which led to the departure of many inhabitants to the nearby town of Alezio. It was repopulated from 1309 under the feudal domination of the Principality of Taranto to which it was attached.
On May 16, 1484, during the Ferrara War, 70 Venetian warships landed 7,000 fighters around the city, which refused any submission to the King of Naples. It was then stormed on the 19th (its population undergoing a real massacre), then was then given to the Angevins3.
The city prospered from the end of the 16th century, a date which marks the beginning of the Baroque craze in the decoration of buildings.
Thanks to the port built by Ferdinand I of the Two Sicilies in the 18th century, it became the first exporting center of olive oil in the whole of the Mediterranean, the precious product used to power oil lamps throughout Europe. From 1861 it's part of Italy proper.
