On January 30th, 1948, Mahatma Gandhi was shot dead. Here the Nobel Peace Prize winner Prof. Muhammad Yunus remembers that day when his entire household fell into a shocked silence. A seven year old boy at the time, Yunus shares the vivid memory of how his father, who politically disagreed with Gandhi, wept on hearing that Gandhi had been killed.
This illustrates how in millions of households, where Gandhi may have been regarded as a political opponent, there was a welling-up of grief and a sense of personal loss, when his life was violently snuffed out. Gandhi represented the striving for 'swaraj' the process of seeking command over one's self, over one's passions. This is not only the basis for nonviolence but also of a suprapersonal happiness.
