Imagine walking along a river and you see a black rhino stranded in the river. As the Rhino Patrol Rangers were doing their usual rounds along the Ewaso Nyiro a couple of weeks ago, they came across Meluya, a black rhino, looking rather lost, knee-deep in the middle of the river. The rangers reported the incident and rapid action was taken to save him.
Meluya had only gone in for a drink, but wandered up the river and away from his entry point. When he decided to get out, the banks surrounding him were steep and slippery, and he was stuck.
The Conservation Department sent rangers at once, to try and lay down a route of dry logs that would offer better traction, but it didn't work. Then, the Logistics Manager was called, and he immediately sent over an excavator to dig out a path for Muleya. This worked pretty well and finally, he came bounding up the bank, relieved to be out of the chilly river at last, and trotted, perfectly safe, back into the bush.
Many thanks to the Conservation and Logistics Departments for working together to keep our wildlife safe.
